Herbs de Provence infusing in olive oil.

Herbs de Provence infusing in olive oil.

remember when the ice blew our hair cold
and the shadows our hands made looked like
skeletons on the rubber floor?  that was not
so long ago.  but do you remember before that,
before all this, before we knew what was below
we were children and we’d pray for snow and
when we’d awake to see it we would take in the whole world and gasp and grin?
and remember what it tasted like?  the snow?
it wasn’t as cold as i thought it would be, it was
fluffy and crunchy all at once! and i thought
i’d never tasted something so
wonderful and tasteless.

Video I made for Church Hill Activities & Tutoring.  Loving the black & white portraiture of the students. Comments are adapted from students answers to the prompt: “What is God’s favorite thing about you?”  Scripture at the beginning and end of video quoted from Isaiah 43.  Song is Crags and Clay by Gungor.  Photography done by Michael & me.

february two thousand and ten

please, freeze again
i’m thawing
we all are
exposure, and i’m not ready
count my blemishes, my flaws
i’m not perfect like i thought i was.
please, again,
turn my wailing into dancing
my face from me to you.
i feel you -
the sun on my skin
his fingers through my hair
the air, inside my head.
i need you -
the substance of life
the air in my lungs
space and time.
i cry out -
i want to shake the world
tell them i was dead
